This year's symposium is significant as it is the first time it is being hosted in West Texas. The only other time the event was held in Texas was in Houston in the late 1990s.

The WSO, founded in 1975 after an international conference organized by the Safety Organization of the Philippines, has grown exponentially over the years. The organization promotes the exchange of information among its members, collaborates with other international organizations, and advances safety technology. Its overarching theme is "Making Safety a Way of Life... Worldwide." Additionally, the WSO assists in the establishment of other safety organizations and encourages developed countries to share their knowledge with those in need.

Mayor Javier Joven's presence at the WSO event highlights the importance Odessa places on safety and its commitment to promoting a culture of safety in the region.
