MISD to Hold Public Meeting on Tax Rate
The Midland Independent School District (MISD) is taking steps to address new tax rate requirements imposed by a state law. The district has revised its proposed tax rate in response to the legislation, which called for additional maintenance and operations (M&O) tax rate compression. In a recent press release, MISD stated that the revised tax rate represents a commitment to fiscal responsibility and will benefit both taxpayers and the community.
The revised tax rate proposed by MISD is $0.8795, with $0.6595 allocated for M&O and $0.2200 for interest and sinking (I&S). This represents a reduction of 3.53 cents compared to the previous year's tax rate. The district emphasized that this lower rate will not only address current debt but also result in approximately $33 million in savings for taxpayers.
To provide the community with an opportunity to discuss and address any concerns regarding the tax rate, the MISD Board of Trustees will hold a public meeting on September 19 at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will take place at Bowie Fine Arts Academy, located at 805 Elk Ave. Members of the public who wish to speak at the meeting are encouraged to sign up before its commencement.
MISD's commitment to fiscal responsibility and the decision to revise the tax rate highlights the district's dedication to keeping taxpayer dollars within the community. By taking advantage of the tax rate compression, the district aims to benefit students, staff, and the wider community. This public meeting will provide an important platform for the community to engage in a dialogue with the district and have their voices heard regarding the proposed tax rate.
