After tragedy struck a law enforcement family over the holiday season, community members in the Odessa area are coming together to help Trooper David Moya and his family recover from the losses they suffered in a house fire.

Everything that the family had in their home was lost in the fire that took place over Christmas, according to a Facebook post seeking donations. As a result, those helping the Moya family are asking for donations even of basic clothing items and shoes for both children and adults.

The fire started from a heating lamp that was left unattended, according to coverage by Your Basin. However, no one in the family was home, fortunately meaning that no one was injured in the blaze.

Alejandro Luna, lieutenant for Ward County, told Your Basin that the situation was heartbreaking.

“I mean you work so hard for building your household to keep your vehicles and just one night is just gone,” Your Basin quoted Luna as saying.

Donations are being taken at the Ector County Sheriff’s Office, located at 2500 South Highway 385 in Odessa, according to the Facebook post. A donation box will be made available at that location through Friday, Jan. 15.

Luna told Your Basin that he has been happy to see how the community has responded to the tragedy.

“It feels nice, he’s a wonderful person,” Luna was quoted as saying by Your Basin. “It feels great that people come together and help him out.”

Among the items requested for donation are clothing in girls 3T and boys 4T sizes, extra-small clothes for the 16-year-old daughter and pants in 29-by-32 for the 15-year-old son as well as small men’s shirts, men’s 38-by-32 pants and large shirts, as well as women’s size 8, petite and medium shirts, according to the facebook post. Shoe sizes needed are sizes eight and nine for the youngest girl and boy respectively, size 5.5 and 8.5 for the older girl and boy respectively, and men’s size 8.5-to-9 as well as women’s size 5-to-5.5.
