After Midland and Texas Department of Transportation crews had to pretreat roads in the city, motorists are advised to take precautions driving as if the roads haven’t been treated.
Before starting a trip, motorists should clear all snow and ice from their vehicles’ windows before driving, the City of Midland advised on Facebook.
Winter driving conditions require motorists to slow down, as speed limits are set for optimal driving conditions. Drivers should allow double the commute time if travel is required.
Snow and particularly ice will require longer stopping distances, so allow much more room to stop. Add even more room between you and other vehicles to account for this.
If your vehicle starts to skid, take your foot off the gas and steer in the direction you want to travel, the city advised on Facebook. Don’t slam on the brakes, as that will cause a skid with loss of traction. Use brakes to gradually come to a stop over a longer distance.
The signs are correct: Bridges do ice over faster than roadways. Shady spots also take longer to thaw, so expect to encounter ice in the shade.
Cruise control should not be used during winter driving.
