The Michaels Organization is renovating the Chaparral Apartments a "critical affordable housing resource in Midland," MultifamilyBiz reported.

"The modernization of Chaparral will provide much-needed upgrades to the apartments and community amenities while preserving long-term affordability," the story said.

The Chaparral Apartments have been in desperate need of a makeover, due to a lack of suitable amenities and a general need for upgrades, MultiFamilybiz reported.

In July 2019, the project was awarded 9% competitive federal tax credits from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, which will help the organization carry out the improvements.

Ryan Zent, vice president of development for Michaels, commented on the organization’s ability to provide even better living spaces.

“We are grateful to the City of Midland and the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs for recognizing the importance of preserving existing affordable housing," Zent told Multifamily Biz. "We welcome this opportunity to reinvest in our community, providing modern interior and exterior upgrades that will enhance the quality of life for current and future residents.”

The apartments were built in 1972. The Michaels organization, a privately held company, became the owner in 1994. There are 124 apartments available in the 14  buildings. A clubhouse is also part of the facility.

Among the improvements to the property are kitchen remodels, flooring replacements, new plumbing installations and light fixtures, as well as upgrades to the clubhouse and a new children’s area and outdoor seating space.

The upgrades will be carried out by Michaels Construction but design services were delivered by Kelly Grossman Architects, Connect Structural Engineering and Newton Engineering.

The renovations are slated to be finished by May 2021. Should residents need to be relocated during the process, they will be advised in a timely manner.

Isaac Garnett, Midland's Community Development Manager, said that this upgrade project will provide families with the accommodations they deserve.
