Family Promise of Midland has taken the first step in its expansion endeavors.

After breaking ground, phase one of the huge project includes the expansion of the day center and building onsite administrative offices to the property.

The next phase in the process seeks to add five more transitional housing duplexes. These homes will be able to house another 10 families.

As affordable housing in Midland has become an ongoing issue, organizers said this is a step in the right direction to help more people in need.

“We’re talking about families who are part of the workforce,” Family Promise Executive Director Tom Miller told KOSA.

“The rents are high, the cost of living is high and a family cannot live on $10 to $12 an hour. They just can’t do it in Midland, Texas.”

Family Promise said it still needs to raise more than $1 million to help cover the escalating costs and fees of phase two. The organization said it is seeking donations, which will help keep the projects on track.
