The Midland Police Department may not be short-handed for much longer, as it is actively seeking to find the right recruits for its 37 open officer positions.
The police department has been holding tryouts for prospective police officers once a month.
"Community is growing, we don't have enough officers out on our street to be giving our community the response time that we need to, we're doing the best we can," Biana Rodriguez, a background investigator for Midland Police Department’s recruiting process, told NewsWest9.
For those trying out, looks can be deceiving.
"It's definitely a challenge. It seems easy, I've had people come in here and be like, 'oh, 25 push-ups, 30 sit-ups, I can do that.' But when you get in here and we show you the way it has to be done it's actually difficult," Rodriguez said.
Along with the physical, there is also a written portion within the tryout.
